Malaysia Travel Guide

Planning a Malaysia trip from Nepal

What a Nepali passport holder has to arrange for Malaysia, in the order it happens: where to go in the month you travel, the visa, the online arrival card, the flights, the rule that decides a trip with Singapore, and the money. Entry rules change, so each rule here links to the official page it comes from.

Questions

Malaysia trip questions, answered

Yes. A Nepali passport needs Malaysia's eVISA, approved before you fly. There is no visa-free entry for Nepal and no visa to buy at the airport. The fee is RM 125, about NPR 4,750, made up of a RM 20 visa fee and a RM 105 processing fee, and the visa allows one entry. The airline checks for it at the counter in Kathmandu. We apply for it with every Malaysia trip we book.

No. Australia is on Malaysia's list of countries whose citizens need no visa to enter, so an Australian passport holder does not apply for one before a holiday. Like every foreign visitor, they still fill in the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card in the three days before landing.

Three costs make up the trip: the package, the flight and the visa. The package prices on this page cover everything inside Malaysia, per person, including any flight between Malaysian cities that the route needs. The flight from Kathmandu to Kuala Lumpur changes most with the season. The eVISA is RM 125, about NPR 4,750. Hotels also collect Malaysia's tourism tax of RM 10 per room per night at check-in. Tell us your dates and we quote all of it together.

Yes. Kathmandu has non-stop flights to Kuala Lumpur, which take a little under five hours. That is why Malaysia fits into four or five days of leave when Bali or Vietnam, which need a change of planes, do not. There is no direct flight to Langkawi or Penang; you change in Kuala Lumpur for a flight of about an hour.

Three nights covers Kuala Lumpur with a day at Batu Caves and Genting Highlands. With four nights you add Malacca or a theme park day. Five nights is enough for Kuala Lumpur and a beach on Langkawi, or for Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Seven nights covers Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi. Each extra place adds a flight of about an hour.

Kuala Lumpur is hot all year, 32 to 34 degrees by day, and can be visited in any month; its wettest months are October, November, April and May, when the rain comes as an afternoon storm. Langkawi and Penang are at their best from December to March. The islands on the east coast close from about November to February. The guide above goes through the months in detail.

For Kuala Lumpur, Genting Highlands and Malacca, yes, with an umbrella: October and November are among the wetter months, but the rain usually falls in the afternoon and passes. For Langkawi it is not the best time, because those are the island's wettest months too. If the beach matters most, go between December and March. Flights from Kathmandu cost most around both festivals, so book two to three months ahead.

Yes, if the route is in the right order. Malaysia's eVISA allows a Nepali passport one entry, so fly into Kuala Lumpur, travel to Singapore, and fly home from Singapore. Coming back into Malaysia afterwards needs a second visa. Singapore does not ask a Nepali passport for a visa for a short visit, only its free SG Arrival Card. Our Kuala Lumpur and Singapore trips are planned this way.

Yes, if you want a beach and have at least five nights. Langkawi is an hour's flight from Kuala Lumpur and gives you the cable car and Sky Bridge, island-hopping by boat and a resort on the sand. It needs three nights to be worth the two flights. From September to November it rains most afternoons, so in those months many travellers choose Penang or stay longer in Kuala Lumpur.

A day is enough for most people. Genting is about an hour from Kuala Lumpur, and a day covers the cable car, the cool air and a few hours at the top. Stay a night if your family wants a full day in the Genting SkyWorlds theme park, which closes at 6 pm and is shut on Tuesdays outside school holidays. All our trips go for the day; we can change one hotel night to Genting on request.

Easily in Kuala Lumpur. Brickfields, the Little India beside KL Sentral station, has South Indian vegetarian restaurants serving thali on a banana leaf, and there are Nepali restaurants serving dal bhat and momo around Medan Pasar and Jalan Tun H S Lee near Chinatown. Penang has its own Little India. Langkawi has fewer choices, so tell us when you book and we choose a resort that cooks vegetarian meals. Malay dishes often contain shrimp paste or dried anchovies, so ask before you order.

Yes. Every trip here is a starting point. We can add nights, change the hotel category, add Langkawi, Penang or Singapore to a route, or change a Kuala Lumpur night to Genting, and we requote the land price for the changes.

In US dollars, changed into ringgit at a licensed money changer in Kuala Lumpur. A bank in Nepal sells you dollars against your passport, ticket and visa, and the bank's stamp for at least USD 500 is also what immigration at Tribhuvan airport asks a tourist to show. One ringgit is about NPR 38. Cards work in hotels and malls; food stalls, markets and small shops take cash.

Yes, the Embassy of Malaysia is at Bakhundole in Lalitpur, open Monday to Friday. You do not need to go there for a holiday, because the eVISA is applied for online.

Yes, in Kuala Lumpur, at Wisma Paradise on Jalan Ampang. Contact it for a lost passport or anything else that needs the Nepali government. The emergency number in Malaysia is 999.
