Malaysia Visa for Nepali 2026: Fee, Documents and How to Apply

Travel Nepal HolidaysOctober 12, 2026

The Malaysia visa for Nepali travellers is an eVISA that you apply for online and must have approved before you fly. It costs RM 125 for a Nepali passport, about NPR 4,750, made up of a RM 20 visa fee and a RM 105 processing fee. It allows one entry, is valid for three months from the day it is issued, and the decision normally comes within two to seven working days. Malaysia is not visa-free for a Nepali passport, and you cannot get the visa at the airport when you land.

Two more things decide whether the trip goes smoothly. Every foreign visitor fills in the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card in the three days before landing. And because the visa allows only one entry, the order of your route matters if the same trip includes Singapore. The fees are set in Malaysian ringgit, so the rupee amounts on this page are approximate.

Do Nepalese citizens need a visa for Malaysia?

Yes. Nepal is on the Immigration Department of Malaysia's list of countries whose citizens need a visa to enter, so every Nepali passport holder must have one approved before travelling. For a holiday, that visa is the eVISA, which you apply for on the department's official eVISA portal.

The eVISA is a social visit visa. It covers a holiday, a family visit or a short trip to see the country. It does not allow you to work. A job or a course of study in Malaysia needs a different visa, which the employer or the college arranges from inside Malaysia.

Airlines check for the visa at the counter in Kathmandu. Without an approved one, you will not be allowed to board.

How much does the Malaysia visa cost for Nepalese?

The Malaysia eVISA costs RM 125 for a Nepali passport: a visa fee of RM 20 and a processing fee of RM 105. Those are the amounts the Embassy of Malaysia in Kathmandu lists for Nepali applicants. At Nepal Rastra Bank's selling rate of NPR 37.96 to the ringgit in mid-October 2026, RM 125 is about NPR 4,750.

You pay online when you submit the form, by international card or e-wallet. A refused application means applying and paying again, so it is worth getting the form right the first time.

Only one address is official: malaysiavisa.imi.gov.my. Many other sites look official and charge several times the government fee for the same visa. If the address does not end in imi.gov.my, you are not on the Immigration Department's site.

What documents does the Malaysia eVISA need?

The Embassy of Malaysia in Kathmandu asks for six things: your passport page, a photo, a confirmed return ticket, proof of money, a hotel booking and, for a child, a birth certificate. All of them are uploaded to the portal as images or files, and nothing is handed in on paper.

  • Passport: A clear image of the data page. The passport must be valid for more than six months from the day you travel to Malaysia. The embassy also asks for the observation page.
  • Photo: A studio passport photo on a white background, 35 mm wide and 50 mm tall, with no cap and no glasses. The file has to be under 2 MB.
  • Flight ticket: A confirmed round-trip ticket. If you fly home from Singapore, it is the ticket out of Singapore that shows you are leaving.
  • Proof of money: Either the record of at least USD 500 bought from a bank, about NPR 77,500, or your latest bank statement. If you plan a longer stay, the embassy expects a further USD 50 for each extra day.
  • Hotel booking: The confirmation for your stay in Malaysia.
  • Birth certificate: For every applicant who is a minor.

Any document that is not in English needs an English translation attached. For most Nepali families that means the birth certificate, which the ward office issues in Nepali. A bank statement is already in English.

The dollars you buy for the trip do two jobs: they are your spending money, and the bank's record of the exchange is your proof of money. Our guide to how much dollar you can carry from Nepal explains how much a bank will sell you and what it needs to see.

How long does the Malaysia visa take, and when should you apply?

Allow two to seven working days, and apply two to three weeks before you fly. The embassy in Kathmandu aims to process a social visit visa within 48 hours on working days, and the portal tells applicants to expect the result by email within two to seven working days.

Working days here mean Monday to Friday. Sunday is a working day in Nepal but not at the embassy, and weekends and public holidays in Malaysia are not counted either. An application sent on a Friday afternoon before Dashain can sit for more than a week without anyone being slow. The other limit runs the opposite way. A single-entry visa is valid for three months from the day it is issued, not from the day you travel, so one issued too early can run out before your flight. Applying two to three weeks ahead leaves room for a request for a better photo or a missing document, and applying more than two months ahead leaves too little of the three months for a changed flight or a postponed trip. Check the validity dates on the visa as soon as it arrives, and check them again if the airline moves your flight.

How do you apply for the Malaysia eVISA from Nepal?

You apply on the Immigration Department's eVISA portal, and the whole process is online. There is no interview and no passport to hand in.

  1. Open the official portal and register. The address is malaysiavisa.imi.gov.my. You create an account with your email address and confirm it before you can apply.
  2. Upload your passport page. The portal reads your details from the two lines of letters and numbers at the bottom of the data page, and the rest of the form stays locked until it has read them. Photograph the page flat and sharp, with no fingers or desk showing around it.
  3. Upload your photo. The portal has a photo check page where you can test the photo before you start. A photo that fails there will fail in the application.
  4. Fill in the trip and add your documents. Your travel dates, your address in Malaysia, the ticket, the hotel booking and the proof of money.
  5. Review and pay. Read every line against your passport, then pay the RM 125.
  6. Download and print the eVISA. The result comes by email. Print two copies and keep one on your phone.

The payment step is where a Nepali card can let you down. The fee is charged in ringgit, so an ordinary rupee debit card will not work. You need a dollar card from your bank with enough of its yearly limit left, and the one-time password has to reach your phone.

If the portal reads a long name badly, type it in full exactly as it is printed on the passport's data page. A name on the visa that does not match the passport is a problem at the airline counter, not only at immigration.

How do you check your Malaysia visa status?

The result of your application is sent to the email address you registered with, and it also shows in your account on the portal. Once the eVISA is issued, the portal's Check eVISA page confirms that it is genuine: you enter your passport number and the sticker number printed on the visa.

When the visa arrives, check every detail against your passport: the spelling of your name, the passport number, your date of birth and the validity dates. A mistake is far easier to fix from Kathmandu than at an immigration desk in Kuala Lumpur.

That page is for the tourist eVISA only. A work visa arranged by an employer in Malaysia is a different document and is not checked there.

What is the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card, and do you need it?

It is an online form that every foreign visitor completes for Malaysian immigration, and it is separate from your visa. Fill it in on the Immigration Department's arrival card site in the three days before you arrive. Nepali travellers are not among the few groups that are exempt, so each person in the family needs one.

  • Do not fill it in too early. The form accepts a trip only within three days, counting the day you submit it. For a Friday arrival, Wednesday is the earliest day.
  • Have your details ready. Passport number, flight number, arrival and departure dates, and the address, city and postcode of your first hotel in Malaysia.
  • It has no fee. The form has no payment step. A site that asks you to pay for the arrival card is not the official one.
  • It is not a visa. The arrival card does not replace the eVISA. A Nepali traveller needs both.

Does a Nepali passport need a visa for Singapore on the same trip?

No. Nepal is not on Singapore's list of countries whose citizens need an entry visa, so a Nepali passport holder does not apply for one before a short visit. What Singapore does ask for is the SG Arrival Card, which is free and is submitted within the three days before you arrive.

The part to plan is Malaysia, not Singapore. Your Malaysia eVISA allows one entry, and it is used up the moment you leave the country. Malaysia gives multiple-entry social visit visas only to citizens of India and China, so a Nepali traveller cannot buy a second entry in advance. Going back into Malaysia after Singapore means a new application and another RM 125.

Fly to Singapore, travel to Kuala Lumpur, fly home from Kuala LumpurOneThis also works. Fill in the Malaysia arrival card before you cross from Singapore.
Fly to Kuala Lumpur, visit Singapore, return to Kuala Lumpur to fly homeTwoThe second entry needs a second visa, approved before you leave Nepal or while you wait in Singapore.

Our Malaysia and Singapore tour runs in the first order for this reason: three nights in Kuala Lumpur with a day at Genting Highlands, a coach to Singapore, and the flight home from Singapore.

Watch the flight home as well. A flight from Singapore that connects through Kuala Lumpur can count as entering Malaysia again if you have to collect your bags or change terminals. Book a flight that does not pass back through Malaysia, or ask us to check the connection before you pay for it.

Not needing a visa is not a promise of entry. Singapore's officers decide at the border, so carry your return ticket and hotel bookings in your hand luggage.

Do you need an agent for the Malaysia visa?

No. If you have a dollar card, a studio photo and your bookings ready, you can apply for the eVISA yourself in one sitting for RM 125. For a simple trip to Kuala Lumpur and back, that is what we would tell a friend to do.

Help is worth having in three situations.

  • You have no dollar card, or its yearly limit is already used.
  • Your route includes Singapore. The order of the countries and the flight home decide if you need one visa or two, and a wrong choice costs a second fee and several days.
  • You are travelling as a family. Each person needs their own application, a child needs a translated birth certificate, and one rejected photo holds up everyone.

No one outside the Malaysian government can guarantee approval or a faster decision, and that includes us.

How Travel Nepal Holidays handles your Malaysia visa

We prepare and submit the eVISA for you from Kathmandu and pay the fee, so you do not need a dollar card. When you book our Malaysia and Singapore tour, the eVISA fee is already inside the package price.

  • Photo and passport check. We make sure both images meet the portal's rules before they are uploaded, so the application is not held up over a photo.
  • Real bookings. The ticket and hotel confirmations that go with your application are the ones for your actual trip.
  • Route checked against the visa. We plan the order of Malaysia and Singapore and the flight home so that one entry is enough.
  • Families and groups. We check every application together, so the names, dates and documents all agree.
  • Arrival cards. We send you the links for the Malaysia and Singapore arrival cards three days before each border, with the hotel address to copy in.
