Vietnam Travel Guide

Planning a Vietnam trip from Nepal

What a Nepali passport holder has to arrange for Vietnam, in the order it happens: which part of the country to visit in the month you travel, the visa, the online arrival form, the flights, and the money. Entry rules change, so each rule here links to the official page it comes from.

Questions

Vietnam trip questions, answered

Yes. A Nepali passport needs Vietnam's e-visa, approved before you fly. There is no visa-free entry and no visa you can simply buy at the airport. The government fee is USD 25 for a single entry, about NPR 3,900, and the visa allows a stay of up to 90 days. The airline checks for it at the counter in Kathmandu. We apply for it with every Vietnam trip we book.

Three costs make up the trip: the package, the flight and the visa. The package prices on this page cover everything inside Vietnam, per person, including any flight between Vietnamese cities that the route needs. The flight from Kathmandu is the largest and most changeable part, because every route connects in another city. The e-visa is about NPR 3,900. Tell us your dates and we quote all three together.

No. Every journey connects once, most often in Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Delhi or Kolkata, and takes between nine and fourteen hours each way depending on the wait. You can fly into Hanoi, Da Nang or Ho Chi Minh City, and flying into one and out of another is fine on one e-visa. We look for one ticket that covers both flights, so that the airline has to rebook you if the first flight is late.

Four nights covers Hanoi, Ninh Binh and an overnight cruise on Ha Long Bay, and fits a week of leave. With five or six nights you add Da Nang and Hoi An with one flight inside Vietnam. North to south, from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, needs seven nights or more and two flights inside Vietnam. Vietnam is long, so each extra region adds a travel day.

It depends on the region, because the north, the centre and the south have different seasons. Hanoi and Ha Long Bay are best from October to April, though December to February is cold and often grey. Da Nang and Hoi An are best from February to August and have storms and floods from September to December. Ho Chi Minh City and Phu Quoc are driest from December to April. The guide above goes through the months in detail.

For Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, yes: October and November are the best months of the year in the north, with clear, dry days. Da Nang and Hoi An are in their storm season then, so for a beach choose Phu Quoc, where the dry season starts in November. Flights from Kathmandu cost most around both festivals, so book two to three months ahead.

Overnight, if you can spare the night. A day trip from Hanoi spends five hours on the road for four hours on the water. An overnight cruise sails further out, includes dinner, breakfast, kayaking and a cave visit, and the bay at sunrise is the part people remember. All our trips to the north include a night on board. Cruises are cancelled when a storm is forecast, so we never plan the cruise for the day before your flight home.

Only if you fly into Phu Quoc directly from outside Vietnam and stay on the island. Vietnam allows every nationality 30 days on Phu Quoc without a visa on that condition. The moment you go to the mainland, even for a day in Ho Chi Minh City, you need the e-visa. There is no direct flight from Kathmandu to Phu Quoc, so we apply for the e-visa on every Phu Quoc trip and the question never arises at the airport.

Yes. Hanoi's Old Quarter, Da Nang, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City all have Indian restaurants, several run by Nepali families. Vietnamese vegetarian food, called "chay", is sold at small restaurants near every pagoda, and most hotels cook eggs and vegetable dishes on request. Many soups use fish sauce, so ask for "an chay" when ordering. Tell us when you book and we choose hotels and cruise boats that cook for you.

Yes. Every trip here is a starting point. We can add nights, change the hotel category, add Sapa, Hue or Phu Quoc to a route, or join two routes, and we requote the land price for the changes.
