How much should you budget for a Maldives trip from Nepal?

Your Maldives trip budget should bring together the hotel, return flights, island transfers and any meals or activities you will pay for separately. It helps to start with a stay that suits you and work outwards from there, checking whether each price is for one person or for two people sharing a room.

For example, Kaani Beach Hotel's three-night package includes breakfast, return speedboat transfers, night fishing and a marine excursion with a sandbank lunch. Taxes and service charge are included in the USD 711 price, although the hotel does not give a travel-date validity for the offer. Treat it as an example of what a stay can include, and request the price and availability for the dates you have in mind.

With a budget of NPR 100,000 per person, the shared hotel example above would leave about NPR 44,800 for return flights, extra meals, insurance and personal spending. Whether that is enough comes down to the airfare and the hotel price available for your dates. Once you have those two quotes, you'll be able to see whether the trip fits your budget or whether a different stay would leave you more room for the rest of the holiday.

Return flights from Kathmandu can make a substantial difference to your Maldives budget, especially on a short holiday. Comparing complete return itineraries for the same dates will give you a more useful picture than a one-way headline price, which leaves part of the journey out.

When looking at SriLankan Airlines' Kathmandu departures or flydubai's Kathmandu to Maldives route, search from Kathmandu, KTM, to Velana International Airport, MLE, with your outbound and return dates. Fares and schedules can change, so take the time to compare the baggage allowance, connection and booking terms alongside the price.

A connection is easier to assess when you know whether all the flights are on one booking, whether your luggage will be checked through, and whether you need to clear immigration along the way. These details matter more than a small saving if they mean a long wait or extra arrangements during transit.

Your arrival time also needs to work with the boat or flight taking you to the island. If you arrive after the available transfer, you may need an extra hotel night near the airport, which changes both the budget and the time you have at your chosen stay. How much do island transfers and taxes add?

Island transfers can be included in your hotel package or charged separately, so they belong in the budget before you settle on a property. The return cost for everyone travelling, together with any taxes still payable, helps you compare the actual amount you'll spend.

As an example, Kaani's Maafushi speedboat service lists USD 25 per adult each way, making a return journey USD 50 when bought separately. That transfer is already included in the three-night Kaani package above, so you would not add it again to that example.

At Summer Island Maldives, speedboat or seaplane transfer charges are compulsory. Its published transfer information does not specify the tax basis, so ask for the final payable amount when requesting a quote. These are property-specific examples, and another island may have different transport arrangements and prices.

What are Green Tax and tourism GST?

The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority sets Green Tax at USD 12 per person per stay-day for resorts and other qualifying facilities. For hotels or guesthouses with 50 or fewer registered rooms on inhabited islands, the rate is USD 6. Children under two are exempt from Green Tax, while the property's classification determines which rate applies to other guests.

For two adults with three chargeable stay-days, that would be USD 72 at the USD 12 rate or USD 36 at the USD 6 rate. The hotel can confirm the chargeable stay period and whether the amount is already in your quote, which helps you avoid counting the same tax twice.

MIRA's tourism GST rate is 17% on taxable tourism supplies. When budgeting, use the property's tax breakdown rather than adding 17% to the whole trip, since your Nepal-departure total includes other costs too. An itemised quote should show the included taxes and service charges, along with anything you will still need to pay at the property.

What is usually outside a Maldives package price?
