A six-day trip to Bali costs most Nepali travellers somewhere between NPR 130,000 and NPR 315,000 per person. That covers your return flight from Kathmandu, the visa, the tourist levy, your hotel, food and getting around the island. A comfortable middle-of-the-road trip lands close to NPR 200,000.

Before anything else: you cannot get a visa when you land in Bali. Nepal is not on Indonesia's visa-on-arrival list, so you must have an approved visa in hand before you fly, and airlines in Kathmandu will refuse to board you without one. Plan for that first, because it takes weeks and it is the step that stops trips.

Please treat every price here as a guide, not a fixed quote. Costs change all the time, and the flight changes the most. There is no direct flight from Kathmandu to Bali, so what you pay depends heavily on where you connect and how early you book — the same journey can swing by NPR 25,000 or more. We checked these figures in September 2026, when a US dollar was about NPR 151 and 1,000 Indonesian rupiah was about NPR 8.60.

How much does a Bali trip cost from Nepal in total?

A six-day, five-night trip to Bali from Nepal costs roughly NPR 130,000 to NPR 315,000 per person in 2026. The flight is the reason Bali costs more than most Southeast Asian trips from Kathmandu — there is no direct service, so you are buying two flights with a connection, and that alone takes NPR 85,000 to NPR 110,000 of your budget before you land. On the ground Bali is genuinely cheap: a guesthouse room, warung meals and a rented scooter keep you to about NPR 5,000 a day. A budget trip comes to around NPR 133,000, a mid-range trip with a nicer hotel and a driver lands near NPR 198,000, and a villa with private transport reaches about NPR 316,000. The tourist visa, which you must arrange before you fly, costs around NPR 11,500, and the Bali tourist levy adds another NPR 1,300. These are estimates and prices move week to week.

If you are travelling as a couple, the total per person drops. The room costs the same for two people as for one, and in Bali a private villa often works out cheaper per head than two separate hotel rooms. Two people on the middle budget spend roughly NPR 355,000 together — about NPR 177,000 each rather than NPR 198,000.

Why is there no direct flight from Kathmandu to Bali?

There simply is not enough traffic on the route to fill a plane. Every journey from Kathmandu to Denpasar connects somewhere — most often Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Singapore or Hong Kong — and which airport you connect through is the single biggest decision you will make about the cost and length of your trip.

Book six to eight weeks ahead. Fares on this route have been running about 12% higher than the same period last year, and they climb sharply around Dashain and Tihar, when everyone in Nepal wants to fly at once. Expect around 14 to 20 hours door to door depending on your layover — this is not a trip you can do comfortably over a long weekend.

One practical warning about the cheapest tickets: if your two flights are on separate bookings rather than one ticket, a delay on the first leg is your problem, not the airline's. On a route where the connection is unavoidable, paying a little more for a single through-ticket is usually money well spent.

Do Nepali citizens get a visa on arrival in Bali?

No. Nepal is not on Indonesia's visa-on-arrival or visa-free list, so you must apply for a tourist visa online and have it approved before you leave Kathmandu. Airlines will not let you board a flight to Indonesia without one. This is the single most important thing to get right about a Bali trip, and it is where most plans come unstuck.

What you need is the C1 tourist visa, sometimes called the 211A or 211C, applied for through the Indonesian immigration e-Visa portal. Here is what to budget for:

• The visa fee: budget NPR 8,000 to NPR 11,500. The Indonesian government fee is IDR 1,000,000, about NPR 8,600, and Kathmandu agents quote within that range depending on whether sponsorship and document support are included.
• How long it takes: usually about five working days once your file is complete, but agents quote anything up to twelve. Apply two to three weeks before you fly so a request for extra documents does not cost you the trip.
• How long it lasts: 60 days, and it can be extended after you arrive.
• The tourist levy: a separate IDR 150,000, about NPR 1,300. Every foreign visitor to Bali pays it and it is nothing to do with the visa.

The documents are the part worth preparing early:

• A passport valid at least six months from your arrival date, with two blank pages.
• A colour passport photograph on a white background.
• A confirmed return or onward flight ticket.
• A hotel booking covering your stay.
• A bank statement showing a closing balance of at least NPR 300,000.
• An international payment card — Visa, MasterCard or JCB — because the fee is paid online in rupiah.

That last one is worth planning for. You need a working international card just to pay for the visa, and Nepali cards are capped at USD 500 of foreign spending per fiscal year across every card you hold. It is a small charge, but if your card is already near that ceiling from other bookings you will not be able to pay, which is one reason many people go through an agent.

That bank balance is the requirement that catches people out, and it is three times what the Thai embassy expects. It is not a fee you pay — it is money that has to be sitting in your account and staying there across the statement period. A large deposit made shortly before you apply reads as borrowed and is a common reason for refusal.

The tourist levy is separate and easy to forget. Pay it through the Bali government's own Love Bali portal before you travel, or on arrival, and keep the QR code — you can be asked for it at some attractions.

What do hotels, food and transport cost per day in Bali?

Once you have paid for your flight and visa, budget NPR 5,000 to NPR 25,000 per person per day depending on how you travel. Bali is cheap day to day, and the single biggest lever is where you stay — not what you eat.

Stay slightly inland and you pay far less for the same thing. Seminyak beachfront and the Canggu tourist strip charge roughly 40 to 60% more than identical food and rooms a few kilometres away. A guesthouse with a pool in a quieter area like Sidemen or Munduk can cost a third of what the same standard costs in Seminyak.

On transport, most visitors hire a scooter because it is cheap and Bali is built around them. Be honest with yourself about whether you ride. Traffic is fast, the roads are unfamiliar, and if you do not hold a valid motorcycle licence with the right international permit, your travel insurance will almost certainly refuse a claim. A car with a driver for the day costs about as much as a decent hotel room, and for a family or a group it is often the better answer.

How much money should you take, and in what form?

Take US dollars and change them in Bali. This matters more for Indonesia than for most destinations, because Nepal Rastra Bank does not publish a rate for the Indonesian rupiah at all — it is not one of the currencies on the daily list. You cannot walk into a bank in Kathmandu and buy rupiah at an official rate, so the practical route is to take dollars and change them at a licensed money changer once you land.

The rules on how much you can take are the same as for any trip abroad. Nepal Rastra Bank currently allows a Nepali passport holder up to USD 3,000 per trip for private travel outside India, which is far more than a Bali holiday needs. Getting it stamped against your passport requires your passport, a confirmed ticket and your visa.

The limit that will actually bite you is the card limit. Personal international card spending is capped at USD 500 per fiscal year, counted across every card and bank you hold — around NPR 76,000, which will not cover a week of villa nights. Plan to carry the bulk as cash or on a prepaid travel card rather than tapping your Nepali debit card.

Two Bali-specific habits worth having. Use licensed money changers with a proper shop front rather than the ones advertising unusually good rates on the street, and count your money before you leave the counter — short-changing is the most common complaint tourists make on the island. And keep some cash on you, because plenty of warungs, temples and small drivers still do not take cards.

Is Bali more expensive than Thailand from Nepal?

Yes, by roughly NPR 45,000 per person for a similar trip — and most of that difference is the flight. A six-day trip to Thailand runs about NPR 90,000 to NPR 250,000, while the same trip to Bali runs about NPR 130,000 to NPR 315,000.

Day to day the two are close. Bali is arguably cheaper for accommodation once you get away from the beach strips, and food at a warung costs about the same as street food in Bangkok. The gap opens up before you arrive: Bangkok is a direct three-and-a-half hour flight from Kathmandu, while Denpasar is a connection of fourteen hours or more.

Neither country gives Nepali travellers a visa on arrival any more, so you are applying in advance either way. The differences are in the detail. Thailand's visa costs about NPR 5,000 and takes 7 to 14 working days; Indonesia's costs around NPR 11,500 and takes 5 to 7. Thailand expects to see roughly NPR 100,000 in your bank statement, Indonesia at least NPR 300,000. So Indonesia is faster but more expensive, and it asks considerably more of your finances.

What is not included, and when is booking it yourself cheaper?

For a straightforward Bali trip, booking it yourself is usually cheaper. One connecting flight, one guesthouse and a rented scooter is not complicated to arrange, and if that is your trip you should keep the difference rather than pay someone to book it for you.

Where a package earns its money on this route is the connection. Bali is not a direct flight, and a missed connection in Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok costs you a night in the wrong city and a re-booked ticket — a risk that sits entirely with you if you assembled the trip from separate tickets. It also matters for honeymoons and anniversaries, where the villa, the transfers and the private tours have to line up on specific dates and there is no room to improvise.

Whatever you decide, keep money aside for the costs that usually sit outside a quoted price:

How many days do you need in Bali?

Six to seven days is the sensible minimum, and that is partly because of the journey. You lose the better part of two days flying each way through a connection, so a five-day trip leaves you barely three days on the island. Ten days lets you see both the south coast and Ubud without spending your holiday in a car.

What is the cheapest month to fly to Bali from Kathmandu?

February, March and October usually offer the best combination of fare and weather. Bali's rainy season runs from November to March, which brings prices down but also brings afternoon downpours. Avoid Dashain and Tihar, when fares out of Kathmandu rise regardless of the season in Indonesia.

Can I use Nepali rupees or an Indian card in Bali?
